The Deplorables is a series of designs that honor popular figures who advocate principles of privacy, transparency, and truth – in particular, those associated with the revelation of secrets. The notes are denominated in the popular cryptocurrency Ethereum and have been specially produced as NFTs – Non-Fungible Tokens – digital assets on the blockchain with a prescribed scarcity. A physical version of these series is planned, while the NFT artwork is available on the Blockchain Art Exchange, in a limited edition of 20.
The next design in the Deplorables series, featuring Edward Snowden, available exclusively on the Blockchain Art Exchange.
Republica de los Deplorables is a fictional non-place of chaos, where secrets are revealed. Appropriately, this series of notes will honor individuals who have revealed secrets – whistleblowers, hackers, activists, and political prisoners. This is the second note in the series, featuring Edward Snowden.
The notes heavily draw on the symbolism of the frog, associated mythology, and the frog’s incarnation as Pepe. The frog, and Pepe, are symbols of chaos, change, the underworld, and the revelation of secrets.
The Venezuelan Bolivar was used as a template for the design, both as a reference to Venezuela’s intention to launch its own cryptocurrency, and as a way to reinforce the idea of a chaotic jurisdiction of exile and disintegration.
The design features a hand-engraved portrait of Edward Snowden, serial numbers, design for intaglio and offset, and a latent image. The latent image pattern appears below the portrait, and reads QUEREMOS SABER: “we want to know”.
A physical version of The Deplorables series will be released soon!
The physical version of this note will be printed on authentic banknote paper and will include multiple security feaures, making it extremely difficult to replicate.
